R. Kelly is reportedly currently in the studio working on a sequel to his multi-platinum debut album, 12 Play. The project, tentatively titled The Return of 12 Play: Night Of The Living Dead, will be an “R&B-like thriller album,” said the singer while talking to Interview Magazine.
Kells started on the LP before his latest release, Love Letter, but stopped to focus all of his creative energy on that effort.
“I was working on the Zodiac album, which was all, like the bump ‘n grinds — I couldn’t work on it because I was so overwhelmed and overpowered and pretty much musically abducted by [the Sam Cooke days],” he explained. “So I switched and started working on Love Letter, and the next thing you know, When A Woman Loves came out and I was like, ‘What?’ I was like ‘Wow!’”
Love Letter sold 154,000 copies in its first week in stores and debuted at the number six spot on Billboard’s 200 chart.
12 Play was released in November of 1993 on Jive Records and featured the hit singles Your Body’s Callin’ and Bump N’ Grind. The LP, which marked his departure from R&B group Public Announcement, remained atop of Billboard’s R&B chart for nine consecutive weeks and thus far has sold over six million copies.
